MIDNIGHT SNACKS MEETS STARFUCKER!

Starfucker is the much buzzed about band from Portland, OR. From their official bio: “Starfucker is a name that is not so much a rejection of the seriousness in the music industry, but a commitment to the playful spirit of their music; an understanding between three multi-instrumentalists in an ethereal galaxy of drums, drum machines, keyboards, guitars, turntables, and a live performance powerful enough to transcend the guilt of actually having fun at a live show.”

I had a chance to ask Shawn a few questions. Here's what he had to say.

1. I've been reading a lot about starfucker since you generated a lot of buzz at CMJ. Do you get irritated by magazines or blogs that use "*'s" and refer to the band as "star****er"?

no it doesn't bother us, sometimes people just need to print our name with asterisks so they don't get in trouble.

2. Who were some of the most interesting people you met in 2008?one of my favorite people we've meet this last year was our friend Jeff from travel portland. he helped put together our trip to Tokyo. Jeff had so many amazing stories to tell and knowledge about Japan. he's a very special kind hearted person. he instantly felt like family to me.

3. What's your craziest road story of 2008?

my craziest time was in Tokyo... most the time was crazy there, but i couldn't sleep the last night, so i went out to the club around 3 in the morning. i sat around drinking bloody marys, trying to talk to the girl who worked there, it was mellow.then a large group a wild ones came in around 4:30 or so.one girl was wearing a pagent sort of thing around her, which i was informed meant it was her birthday.

they started dancing and making lots of noise.then the dj stopped the music and one of the guys got up on a mic and started doing karoke, i thought it was pretty random and funny.but the girl working came and told me this was special and that he was singing his OWN song! and that he was a huge Japanese pop star!and then one by one four others went up and karaokied to their OWN songs too! i couldn't believe it, i was watching pop stars do karaoke to their own music... only in Japan i thought. she brought one guy over and introduced me.he was wearing a kentucky sweatshirt, which i also thought was random and funny.

but he told me he usually plays in big arenas, and desribed himself as the Japanese version of Prince!!!maybe this happens all the time in Tokyo, but non the less, i felt lucky and amazed to have seen that. and then on the way home i got a beer out of a vending machine and drank it on the walk. and thought about how much i love it there...

4. What are a few CD's that you are currently listening to?

right now, i'm listening to the new Deerhoof album "offend maggie" and the last thing on my record player was Ottis Redding's "love man" which is his best i believe...
