MIDNIGHT SNACKS MEETS THE SUEDE BROTHERS!

I met the Suede Brothers last year at The Grog Shop in Cleveland. They were the opening band and when they took the stage I was thinking I hope these teenage kids play six songs and get the fuck off the stage. Boy, was I wrong. Just three riffs into their set I was like "DAMN" this sounds great! Who the hell are these guys?

Then Dylan started singing and I was immediately a Suede Brothers fan! Their sound is like an updated version of Black Sabbath's Master of Reality with Jack White/Geddy Lee on vocals.

These guys are young, hungry, energetic, and a total fresh take in the blues-rock scene. What they are doing is really special.

If these guys don't blow a headliner off the stage during a show, they force headliners to work harder. I've seen them do it many times.

The Suede Brothers are the real fucking deal. The buzz among musicians that play with them and return home to tell friends has been amazing.

They have multiple dates opening up for the Sword (who by the way is touring the nation with Metallica after stops in Cleveland and Columbus)Suede Brothers has also been contacted by management of a few national headliner bands that want to play with them in the Midwest.

Myspace friend these guys NOW! Tell 'em BB sent ya!

I had a chance to ask the guys a few questions before their BIG SHOW January 24th at the Grog Shop in Cleveland with Year Long Disaster and The Sword. Also, their new album comes out this month.

Dylan, Kevin, and Mike all answered my questions. Check it out!

Dylan: singer/guitar

What did you do for New Year's Eve?

I ate at Lolas, downtown Cleveland with my girlfriend and parents. It was exquisite; we need more restaurants of that caliber in Cleveland, not to say I don't love pub food. I think I was in my car when the ball dropped...

2. Who were some of the most interesting people you met in 2008?

Bill Fox. One of my favorite musicians. It was awesome getting to play with him. I'm sure not everyone I met was boring...its hard to remember who you meet in a whole year...

3. So are you tired of playing songs from your album yet? Are you ready for new material? Not really, no (now that will sound bad if the other guys say 'yes'). I think we space the songs from the first album out between enough new material that it works. Sometimes we won't play a song for a while and when we do again, it feels brand new.

4. What were some of your favorite albums this year?

Radiohead's "In Rainbows". Also the Sword's newest album. I was really anticipating the Sword's new album, as well as Radiohead's, so it was a big relief to get both.

Kevin: bass

1. What did you do for New Year's Eve?---Read a book for a while then spent time with my family.

2. Who were some of the most interesting people you met in 2008?

---Meeting Priestess was pretty cool, I'm a big fan of their debut album. The Brought Low and Five Horse Johnson were two great bands I hadn't heard before. Also, from Buffalo, Johnny Nobody. I loved their debut album and can't wait for their follow-up.

3. So are you tired of playing songs from your album yet? Are you ready for new material?

---I'm always ready for new material. That's the best part of being in a band, in my opinion. There is nothing more fulfilling than letting a new song build itself at practice and then playing it for the first few times live. We're never satisfied, either. The moment we finish writing a song, we start thinking about and working on a new one. We're already talking about our third release, and the second one isn't even out yet. It goes both ways, though; there are songs that we don't play anymore, and I will occasionally get the urge to break them out again. It's hard to go backwards, though. New material seems to always win over nostalgia, and it's probably best that way.

4. What were some of your favorite albums this year?

---Virtually all of Radiohead's and Rage Against the Machine's discography, the White Stripe's first record (the rest of their stuff is great, too, I hadn't heard their debut until this year), Witchcraft's debut, Paul Westerberg's "Come Feel Me Tremble", Joni Mitchell's "Blue", some Fu Manchu and Clutch, and a little bit of the Velvet Underground. I've been listening to Queens of the Stoneage's first record a lot, lately.

Mike: drums

1. What did you do for New Year's Eve?It was nice quiet night of solem slumber. In bed by 8 and lights out by 9. haha now thats not quite exactly how it went but sometime like that.

2. Who were some of the most interesting people you met in 2008?

I believe I met Brad from YLD for the first time in 2008 but I would have tosay the most interesting person was my Gov't teacher Mr. Wolski or possibly Rob from Nebula.

3. So are you tired of playing songs from your album yet? Are you ready for new material?

Uhh well in a way but mostly I'm still having fun tweeking the way the play them. I'm always trying to find new and better, sometimes simpler, fills, rhythems, etc, to replace their old or immature placeholder. We've got a new album recorded and almost ready to release so that a bunch of songs we try to incorporate into our live shows 2 maybe 3 a performance.

4. What were some of your favorite albums this year?

Brittany Spears, Circus. No, definately not. I think the first Sword album is awesome. Some other albums I liked are the Weezer CD, In Rainbows (haven't heard in entirety but liked what I've heard), Year Long Disaster, and I can't think of anymore right now but I know theres more.

MIDNIGHT SNACKS MEETS BEARS!

One of my favorite bands out there right now is Cleveland OH's bears. I first heard of them when Pop reader Dennis S. told me he saw a band from Cleveland and asked me if I was familar with them. I was not. So I made sure to check out their next show. I was totally blown away with the great pop melodies that these guys produced. I always go see them every chance I get. They have since been getting a lot of local press as a top band in Cleveland and they appeared on USA Today's Pop Candy podcast. They have had features in Spin magazine and Spin online declaired them a "buzzworthy band".

I had a chance to catch up to Charlie from bears. Here's what he had to say.

1. What did you do for New Year's Eve?I tried to go to a movie (Slumdog Millionaire) that ended up being sold out, so I played Balderdash with my girlfriend and her family. Her mom won.

2. Who were some of the most interesting people you met in 2008?

Kaz of Pwrfl Power, Neil Turk, some great friends I met in Sweden who I'd only known over the internet previously - and some I didn't know at all yet.

3. So are you tired of playing songs from your album yet? Are you ready for new material?

Well, we're taking a bit of a break from playing shows at the moment, but it's always nice to have new material. For the first year or two of our band we played essentially the same songs, so it was nice when we wrote the latest album and had something else to play at shows. I'm already ready for something new again, though, so we shall see what happens.

4. What were some of your favorite albums this year?

Not all of these were released in 2008, but this is what I've listened to the most... and not in any particular order.Cats on Fire - The Province ComplainsWe Are Soldiers, We Have Guns - Get Up, Get Out,Hello Saferide - Introducing...The Mary Onettes - self-titledCelestial - Crystal HeightsPinback - Autumn of the Seraphs (the music, not the cover art)Maritime - Heresy & The Hotel ChoirRocky Votolato - The Brag & CussThe Knife - Silent ShoutNorthern Portrait - The Fallen Aristocracy EPPallers - Humdrum 12"Club 8 - The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming

Thanks Charlie! Hope to see you guys soon!

MIDNIGHT SNACKS MEETS STARFUCKER!

Starfucker is the much buzzed about band from Portland, OR. From their official bio: “Starfucker is a name that is not so much a rejection of the seriousness in the music industry, but a commitment to the playful spirit of their music; an understanding between three multi-instrumentalists in an ethereal galaxy of drums, drum machines, keyboards, guitars, turntables, and a live performance powerful enough to transcend the guilt of actually having fun at a live show.”

I had a chance to ask Shawn a few questions. Here's what he had to say.

1. I've been reading a lot about starfucker since you generated a lot of buzz at CMJ. Do you get irritated by magazines or blogs that use "*'s" and refer to the band as "star****er"?

no it doesn't bother us, sometimes people just need to print our name with asterisks so they don't get in trouble.

2. Who were some of the most interesting people you met in 2008?one of my favorite people we've meet this last year was our friend Jeff from travel portland. he helped put together our trip to Tokyo. Jeff had so many amazing stories to tell and knowledge about Japan. he's a very special kind hearted person. he instantly felt like family to me.

3. What's your craziest road story of 2008?

my craziest time was in Tokyo... most the time was crazy there, but i couldn't sleep the last night, so i went out to the club around 3 in the morning. i sat around drinking bloody marys, trying to talk to the girl who worked there, it was mellow.then a large group a wild ones came in around 4:30 or so.one girl was wearing a pagent sort of thing around her, which i was informed meant it was her birthday.

they started dancing and making lots of noise.then the dj stopped the music and one of the guys got up on a mic and started doing karoke, i thought it was pretty random and funny.but the girl working came and told me this was special and that he was singing his OWN song! and that he was a huge Japanese pop star!and then one by one four others went up and karaokied to their OWN songs too! i couldn't believe it, i was watching pop stars do karaoke to their own music... only in Japan i thought. she brought one guy over and introduced me.he was wearing a kentucky sweatshirt, which i also thought was random and funny.

but he told me he usually plays in big arenas, and desribed himself as the Japanese version of Prince!!!maybe this happens all the time in Tokyo, but non the less, i felt lucky and amazed to have seen that. and then on the way home i got a beer out of a vending machine and drank it on the walk. and thought about how much i love it there...

4. What are a few CD's that you are currently listening to?

right now, i'm listening to the new Deerhoof album "offend maggie" and the last thing on my record player was Ottis Redding's "love man" which is his best i believe...

Thanks Shawn...I hope you come to Cleveland soon!
